I believe the Senate goes back into session today at 9:30 EST? And, that today will be the day ammendments to S. 397 will be offered. Does anyone know if this will still be on CSPAN2 like yesterday? The reason I am asking, I am going to record the entire session, then edit out the non S. 397, to make a mp3 for later listening.

The Senate resumes consideration of S.397 at 9:30am Eastern with a vote on cloture for the actual bill (not just consideration of the bill) scheduled for 2:00pm Eastern.

Now Sen. Coburn R-OK is tearing up the anti-gunners and defending the 2A and saying that we shouldn't let any anti-gun amendments in. :D

Sen. Craig pointing out that the U.S. is the only major world power without its own government run firearms business and that makes them even more dependent on the industry for national security purposes.

Frist said cloture vote on "underlying bill" scheduled for Friday. I believe that means the scheduled period of debate will have expired.

Like others, I 'm confused about whether there is a window for amendments here, and thus my attention. Barring being made obvious by the broadcast, I will check yesterday's Congressional Record as soon as it is posted. With all due respect, I haven't noticed anything here that seems definitive re amendment possibilities..

A list of 61 sponsors of S. 397 was submitted for the record. I believe that would mean the bill has inherent cloture capability, there is control of germane judgments, and that there is voting power ti fight off amendments that could kill the underlying bill.

Schumer, Feinstein and other big players on gun issues are tied up in a Judiciary Committee meeting this morning, but they often come and go during meetings, Coburn already, for example. This is the committee member list:

Arlen Specter
CHAIRMAN, PENNSYLVANIA

Orrin G. Hatch
UTAH

Patrick J. Leahy
RANKING DEMOCRATIC MEMBER, VERMONT

Charles E. Grassley
IOWA

Edward M. Kennedy
MASSACHUSETTS

Jon Kyl
ARIZONA

Joseph R. Biden, Jr.
DELAWARE

Mike DeWine
OHIO

Herbert Kohl
WISCONSIN

Jeff Sessions
ALABAMA

Dianne Feinstein
CALIFORNIA

Lindsey Graham
SOUTH CAROLINA

Russell D. Feingold
WISCONSIN

John Cornyn
TEXAS

Charles E. Schumer
NEW YORK

Sam Brownback
KANSAS

Richard J. Durbin
ILLINOIS

Tom Coburn
OKLAHOMA

Glad I checked in on this thread.....what better way to spend a 100 degree day than watching Sen Coburn kicking butt and taking names. Let's hope it goes well.

Sen. Coburn is good...he did his homework for today's appearance.

As an aside, he just said something to the effect of, "We have to be careful here that we don't have a series of unintended consequences". Wonder if he's a literary sort of man

Heck I've even heard the pro gunners might bring up a repeal of the import parts ban.

I doubt it since cloture passed. Amendments have to be germane IIRC

The cloture vote yesterday was only related to consideration of the bill. It meant that the motion to actually talk about the bill was not filibustered. The motion on cloture for the actual S.397 bill is scheduled to have a vote at 2:00pm today.

This means that the Democrats have until 2:00pm today to offer any amendments they want to the bill, though they may not end up debating those amendments until after today's cloture vote has already passed.

I checked the "Amendments submitted" section of the Congressional Record and found no amendments submitted regarding S.397 yesterday. However I imagine there will be several submitted today... Feinstein has already promised to try and tack a .50 BMG ban onto this bill and considering the number of votes for Boxer's gun lock bill I bet we see that again as well.

Question on cloture votes from Tues 7/25

Congressional Record excerpts, searching on "vote":

**********
During consideration of this measure today, Senate also took the following action:
By 66 yeas to 32 nays (Vote No. 206), three-fifths of those Senators duly chosen and sworn, having voted in the affirmative, Senate agreed to the motion to close further debate on the motion to proceed to consideration of the bill.
*********
A unanimous-consent-time agreement was reached providing for further consideration of the motion to proceed to consideration of the bill at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2005; provided further, that the time from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. be equally divided for debate, followed by a vote on the motion to proceed.
***********

I don't think she is going to because she does not have the votes- Feinstein.

I bet they do try the trigger lock bill.

However I imagine there will be several submitted today... Feinstein has already promised to try and tack a .50 BMG ban onto this bill and considering the number of votes for Boxer's gun lock bill I bet we see that again as well.
Can she do this? It's not really germane to the bill is it?

Senator Craig of Idaho is doing well too. He just made the point that we are the only major world power without a governmental arsenal. We are totally dependent upon private industry for our defense industry. Good on him.

I'm just sick at heart, but we'll fight as well as we can; 60 votes is a strong margin, no question," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who led the fight last year to attach a 10-year extension of the assault weapons ban.

:D

Washington Times

Figures, I connect just in time to hear Craig say "...I note the absence of a quorum." Must be lunchtime in D.C. already.

They're back to 397 on CSPAN 2. Lifeguard Ted is whining about the defense bill being postponed.

That waste of oxygen, Ted Kennedy, is up there blathering on about the Republicans blocking the defense bill because of an ammendment that they didn't like. Nice try..... :fire:
