Marlin 39 Club - Postcard Match

Thanks Frank. Sure was fast!

Okay folks, another poster's question was about malfunctions that might have been caused by over/undertightening the takedown screw.

My question was "how tight?" I've been trying to find a "sweet spot", not too tight, not too loose.

Frank advised to bear down on it with a quarter until the quarter starts to bend.

Frank, I tried that but with my used 1957 rifle the quarter pops out before it reaches the bending stage. It feels like it's starting to flex, so I figure that's close enough.

The action feels nice there. I'll leave it. And shoot it.

Still a bunch of people who haven't sent me any cards yet. Only 18 days until Thanksgiving, get out there and shoot and get those cards in the mail.

Okay folks,

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and this coming weekend will be your last chance to shoot and get a card to me in time. As I said before, if you tell me you have one on the way, I'll wait for it. Do try to have them in the mail no later than Monday the 19th. As it stands now, I have nine entries in the non-magnified class and three in the magnified class.

The list below includes everyone who has shown an interest, even if they never repeated that interest and haven't shot a card. I'll send a PM to those who I haven't heard from and see if they are still in it. Hopefully this weekend there will be a bunch of people shooting 3x5s and participation will be up.

I'm already planning to demand a rematch!:D

Here's an interesting little poll result...

Nine rifles with open sights, three with scopes.

I wonder if that represents a cross section of model 39s?

Is it safe to say that 1/4 of the model 39s wear glass?

That's way more than I would have guessed.

Could it be that THR has a bunch of old guys and we are skewing the results?

Frank,

I can't speak for all, but in my case the scope was only a temporary fixture on my 39A. I placed my Swarvoski Optik 4x32A on the Marlin just to see how'd it do, and since I am tied with you, there's your answers to that. :p

The Swarvoski has since returned home to the custom Mauser .308 my dad had built in 1960, where it can shoot sub MOA holes at 100 yards. The Marlin 39A now holds Skinner Sights and although I didn't do very well in this match, the next one will see a marked improvement because of the amount of practice I've put in lately.

Practice is fun. :D

... the next one will see a marked improvement ...
Oh, I like this thinking. Yes, yes, we're going to want another one (because for a variety of reasons that just keep stacking up, I'm unlikely to get my card in on time for this one).

Jaguar,

What size aperture?

I have the standard .096" in it 90% of the time, but I also have a .025" aperture that I can put on if I need to. The .025" is almost too small, but I have limited access to a machine shop and I may open it up to .040" or so. I have also taken the aperture out and just used it as a ghost ring, but I like the .096" the best. Seems Dr. Skinner knows what he's doing. ;)

I had Dr. Skinner make up a 0.08" ring 'cause I didn't much like the 0.096" ring. 0.025" is awfully small.

I don't get as crisp a optical diffraction center (the little light or dark area in the middle of the sight that I presume is due to diffraction) as with other peeps. It may be a matter of getting the sight perfectly aligned with the barrel centerline or it may be the larger aperture.

Anyway, a nice crisp diffraction center helps me center the sight in the ring. With the Skinner sights I often find the front bead is a little low. With smaller apertures my eye does the auto-correct thing but not with the larger ones.

I guess I'll try the ghost ring on my AR & see what the size/shape of the diffraction center is.

That's my ten cents on aperture optics, if anyone has something to share on this I'm all ears. Or eyes.

Hey, Jag & Slugless, if it's OK with you guys,
I'd like to copy your skinner optics discussion over to the 39 Club pages for the archives.

Now, you've got me interested in the skinner sights. I've got some questions,
but I'll ask them over in the main club house ... as soon as I'm not quite so busy as now ...

Sorry, guys, was going to enter my new 39a in the match, but upon receiving it, I discovered that the two halves did not mate together smoothly. Cycling the bolt just dragged a corner of it along the receiver, so I sent it back to Marlin. I think it was damaged in shipping. Prolly wont get it back before T-Day. :(

I did, however, win a vintage Weaver V4.5 on Ebay today. Maybe I can get that sucker on my Mountie and head out to the range, eh? :p

(ETA: Scope will get here in time, base and rings will not. No scoped entry from me, unless I take a cue from Mal....:D)

Not sure how many of you remember my post about duct taping a scope to my 39 so I could enter the magnified class - Well I did it! (I'm sure Nem will be impressed! :) )

The idea never left my mind, mainly because nothing else of any value was available to takes its place. So, with the end of the match drawing near, I says to myself, why not? I had an old Tasco scope I wouldn't dream of actually mounting on any rifle, so it was the perfect choice for this "project". That is until I looked through it. The image is so dim and the eye relief so short, I had to place the stock on the top of my shoulder in order to see anything through the scope. I even got hit in the cheek by the hammer one time, I backed off a little after that.

I have absolutely no dreams of coming in anywhere but last, but I was very surprised how well the tape job held the scope in place. I didn't attempt to zero the scope, I made a mark on the backer and shot 2 shots. Then I stapled the 3X5 at the center of that "group" and shot the 3 shots at the same spot on the backer.

Picture attached below as per Nem's request. Note the number of 3X5's that gave their lives in order to protect the walnut from the ravages of duct tape adhesive.

Well, it looks like there are four of us now, and everybody wants last place...

I said it before and I'll say it again.

If you guys want last place, you're going to have to earn it!:D

Mal, the duct taped scope is awesome.

It's gonna suck losing to that :)uhoh:), but it's awesome none the less!

Frank, it's a good thing you're shooting w/optics or else you'd have to get out-a my way.

Offhand hard. Offhand in wind - really hard.

It'd better not be windy this weekend.

Is anyone else shooting offhand? If Jag gives me my own category I can be first and last place.
