2023 Hunting Goals

I hope to have a better Turk season, opens in three days. Will use the Brown Bess, but may use the bow if I can convince myself to practice about every day. But as far as I know, the turks are not gobbling yet...but it's a nice long season. Will take the grandson/11yo when possible.

Last deer season up North, I got extremely sick on opening day and had to pack up and come home. I hope to make up for that, and spend at least a week or more up North camped out during muzzle-loader deer and elk season, which run back to back.

As I have still not finished processing my bear hide, I'll just have to let the black bears alone, which means I'll certainly get in range of some nice one. You know how that goes!

I want to build a shooting house so I can stay warm and dry and therefore hunt in all weather. I have a spot designated but have to put up a temporary blind to sit in and make sure deer use the area regularly.
Warm and dry is over-rated. !!!! :) Here's one of my Turkey Blinds I just finished on the State Land. Last year's pic, but I did some "improvements".

I haven't hunted since around 2014. I would like to go this year as my 15yo son has expressed an interest in going.

My desire is to small game hunt a good bit this year. I would also like to archery hunt with my son. We have been shooting our recurves till our arms/shoulders are sore trying to get where we are repeatedly consistent. He is very insistent on making sure his shots are good due to his concern for an ethical shot. We'll see how it all turns out. He's pulling 35lbs and I'm pulling 55lbs.
Right on. That's what it takes, although I've found that shooting every-other day, and not shooting after one becomes fatigued, is more productive.

Just got a new toy and I’ll be Cruising around the western US in this thing.Due to being on the road I am unlikely to hunt anything larger than a coyote because of limited meat storage options and the cost of out of state tags in the places I will likely be in the fall.
All that to say I’m looking forward to doing a lot of upland game hunting.

Nice, I have something like that for long camping and hunting trips, but I made one out of a truck-camper and boat trailer for shorter trips. Nothing wrong with a lot of upland bird hunting, I wish the birds were still good in the area I live in. But they is mostly gone, except on stocked private game preserves.

My "lap of luxury".

The Low Rent special. Platform in the front is for my dirt-bike, I can load and off load it without unhooking the trailer. This will also go places where I wouldn't have the courage to take the big rig.

My oldest daughter drew an antlerless elk hunt in AZ so that’s going to be a main focus

I want to spend more time behind the trigger this year, I think I would benefit from more practice

Waiting for some out of state draw results before finalizing all my plans

I want to get an Aoudad hunt booked. Probably won’t be hunting them this year but I want to have it on the books this year. Been putting it off too long and I’m sick of waiting for the rest of my group to commit. I do have applications pending in New Mexico but assuming I don’t draw, I want to make sure I have a deposit laid on a hunt in 2024 or 2025

I’d like to do some predator and small game hunting this year. I’ve fallen out with both of these and I miss them

I always look forward to hunting grouse early in September up North while I'm scouting my deer and elk hunting grounds. I used to call coyotes quite a bit, but I lost my taste for it, I killed so many. So I declared peace on Coyote. But I miss doing that, the hunting and the calling, and the matching of wits with them dogs. I think I'm ready for another Cougar, especially if I can find or cross paths again with an especially large grey colored one I called in a few years ago, but just couldn't get the shot.

I've got a spot I want to put a big stand. One big enough to comfortably sit 2 people with plenty of room to film a hunt.
Also, I've still never killed a deer with a shotgun or a handgun, so I'd like to check one of those off this season.

I'm getting the itch already. Sent in my lease dues this week and I've already been putting out minerals. Ready to get back out there.

Getting my blinds in order was/is an important 2023 goal. This is another one I improved last week.

Peeping Tom Turkey's view. They have had two weeks to get used to it. After I got-r-done, I cooked up some coffee, kicked back and did some reading. Hopefully no one else will be in them when I head out, but as long as they don't leave any trash, I've got no problem with that.

For sure. There are stretches when we don't get to shoot, and during those times I can relax. For me, it's technique and form from not shooting for so long.

Yep, I really slacked off this winter. Lots of snow, and my archery range is in a three sided pole-barn, in the wife's parking place. But now she's parking outside as frosty-windshield season is past, so I have no excuse. (pretty poor excuse...being too lazy to re-park her car!) Turkey season runs from tomorrow to May 31st, that would give me time, if I start shooting now, to take the bow turk hunting, as that is one of my goals, to get a Turkey with the bow.

I went without getting a deer last season.
First time in about six years I didn’t get one. But, I passed on a few that I could have taken.
So this year I’d like to get one or two if the stars align….
I’d also like to go and hunt the Adirondacks in the “big woods”. We’ll see about that one but it would be great fun in my opinion.
