2023 Hunting Goals

This summer I plan to put some range time in with my 10mm and the goal is to get very close to a large boat. We have a few decent boars (for me) like the one attached that would make a lot of sausage. I would like to get real close to at night while wearing my HECS camo. I will hunt with 200gr fusion, hardcast, XTP or SWIFT A-Frame. I will probably use the A-Frames or hardcast.

I have a friend I am going to introduce to hunting and I will have fun sharing some meat with non-hunters but other than that I just plan to enjoy the outdoors. I will do deer hunting in November but I am looking forward to scouting more than the hunting.

I plan to pray for rain this fall so my food plots will germinate and grow. We had almost no rain between October and the end of the season in January.

I want to build a shooting house so I can stay warm and dry and therefore hunt in all weather. I have a spot designated but have to put up a temporary blind to sit in and make sure deer use the area regularly.

This summer I will be constructing a box blind to replace one of my falling apart popups. I scrounged up 7 free wood pallets for walls. Hoping to get my 2 doe/ 1 buck quota on the small area I hunt- I fell short of that goal this past season cause I didn't see a buck worth shooting.

Goals for 2023 are;

An old mature mule deer buck with my bow whether or not I get a shot I plan on spending a whole bunch of time looking and chasing.

I’d like to call a bull elk within range of an archery kill this year. Actually putting an arrow in one will be a bonus, baby steps.

Spend some quality time with the wife in the outdoors, maybe put her on another cow elk, mule deer buck and a pronghorn.

Pack the horses into a new area I’ve found for black bear in some gorgeous high country.

Get the bird mutts out as much as possible.

I’d like to hunt high country grouse with the bird mutts this year.

If the stars line up, hunt white tails on my buddies farm in Kansas.

And finally I continue to hope and pray for that elusive Bighorn tag this year. 23 points and counting!

I hope to get a velvet buck with my new crossbow and have it mounted.

Planning to get that big 10pt I almost got a shot at last year, hopefully during archery or during muzzle loading with my new Optima.

Hoping my Sil is able to get us an Elk hunt in Nm. I put in for TN"s but didn't get drawn.

Gonna put my usual 4 or 5 deer in the freezer. Planning to use a different rifle for each one. This year it will be the X-bolt 300wm, 700cdl sf 30-06, Savage 110 6.5cm, trusty old 94 30-30, and if opportunity allows, my Henry 45colt.

And...........putting more pigs in the freezer. Wild pig is better than deer, to me.
I don’t have the trigger set in this photo from last night. But I will soon. 9ECD6BEC-8B5A-4B12-BAD9-60E990CB4590.jpeg

Hoping to get an elevated shooting house built. I have one on family land but I want one on mine. Im also hoping to put a bunch of does in the freezer with a bow this season. It’s been three years since I’ve put an arrow through anything but a target.

oh, I almost forgot, I want to build a cabin so I have somewhere to stay. Sadly, there is the issue of funding.

Seems like criminals are more bold and willing to steal now that they know there are no legal consequences for their crimes.
I don’t want to thread steal, so I’m just going to let this be it. It was at my in-law’s house because their land boarders mine (where I hunt, not where I live) in a shed way off the road. They are having work done on their house so the only way someone would’ve even known about it was if it was someone working on the house. I blame my sister-in-law. She nagged them into having the work done against the advice of her much more intelligent siblings. All that to say they didn’t have to be bold. They knew they weren’t being watched. I’m done now. I apologize.

I’m wanting to transition to saddle hunting. I’ve been doing my research and am about ready to order the majority of my kit.

Goal is to get 100 climbs and repels before October 1, starting in daylight but working towards climbing in the dark/headlamp.

Second goal is to spine align all of my factory bolts, that one is ways down list list since I’ll need to buy a spine tester first.

Just got a new toy and I’ll be Cruising around the western US in this thing.Due to being on the road I am unlikely to hunt anything larger than a coyote because of limited meat storage options and the cost of out of state tags in the places I will likely be in the fall.
All that to say I’m looking forward to doing a lot of upland game hunting.

Depending on the type of "saddle" you get, your legs go numb after awhile unless you use branches and/or tree steps to semi-stand on. All the ones I see and the two I bought (a sling seat and a home-made one) cut off the circulation on the backs of my thighs.

Another disadvantage I found was I had to continually push myself away from the trunk with my legs and they would tire and eventually cramp.

I plan to build an elevated hut on my land and put in a better food plot but I have a lot of neighbor pressure-4 stands on the fence line and they shoot every deer they see. I’m pretty sure not all of them have crossed the fence before being shot.
On another great property I’ve deer hunted for almost 40 years I have control again. The 92 year old owner switched farm renters and after years of getting crowded out by the tenants son and his beer buddies, I am back to having exclusive hunting rights on this great creek bottom timber.

I haven't hunted since around 2014. I would like to go this year as my 15yo son has expressed an interest in going.

My desire is to small game hunt a good bit this year. I would also like to archery hunt with my son. We have been shooting our recurves till our arms/shoulders are sore trying to get where we are repeatedly consistent. He is very insistent on making sure his shots are good due to his concern for an ethical shot. We'll see how it all turns out. He's pulling 35lbs and I'm pulling 55lbs.

What are your hunting goals for this year, if any?
My wife's and my first "hunting goal" this year is to kill as many ground squirrels as we can over on our friend's ranch - starting this Friday. We killed close to 500 of them in a few days last April, but today at coffee our friend told me the little vermin are "everywhere" again this year.
The problem is, unlike last April, there's still a lot of snow in the valley where our friend's ranch is located, so we might have problems getting close to the ground squirrel colonies in our pickup truck, and we're too danged old to be hiking very far in 18" deep snow.
The weather's been really good for the last few days though. So maybe we'll get lucky, and the ground squirrels will get unlucky. ;)
