If You Could Only Have Five Guns ...

1. Kimber SIS Ultra
2. Colt AR with M4 upper
3. Pre-64 Winchester M70 in 30-06
4. 870 Marine 12 Ga
5. Mauser Broomhandle C96

Then I'd move somewhere I could have more than 5 guns.

Here is my bread-and-butter, practical unimaginative list

  1. Sig p228
  2. Sig p229
  3. Colt 1911 Commander
  4. Colt AR-15
  5. Benelli M3 Shotgun

Of course, this excludes my top 5 milsurp list, top 5 historical/antique list, and my top 5 unaffordable grail list.

Out of my collection, the final five would be...

1. Sig Sauer 716 patrol .308 rifle
2. Spikes Tactical 5.56 AR15 rifle
3. Benelli M1 super 90 12ga. Shotgun
4. Para Ordnance P14 .45 pistol
5. Ruger 10/22 breakdown .22 rilfle

Today, my 5 would be:

1. Glock 19 Gen 4 for concealed carry.

2. A second Glock 19 Gen 4, because I believe in having a spare carry weapon.

3. S&W 642 for winter coat pocket carry or very rare occasions when I can't carry my 19. So far, I haven't found a time where the 19 wouldn't work, but planning ahead is good.

4. AR... Probably Daniel Defense.

5. Glock 23 Gen 4. I use one to help me keep flinch down.

3/5 so far. Glocks are covered.

1. Custom 1903A3 in 30-06
2. Mossberg 590A1 SPX
3. Smith and Wesson 686+
4. Stiller actions Model 40x reproduction
5. ?????

Those top four can cover 99% of life's needs. A fifth? .22 pistol, AR-15, M1A, short .308 CRF bolt, single shot 12ga., flintlock muzzle loader rifle/shotgun. The fifth is the "just for kicks" slot.

1) Ruger 10/22 TD w/ Eotech
2) Ruger KLCR .357 w/ CT grip
3) Glock 17L 9mm
4) AR 15
5) FN SLP 12 ga
Apparently we've acquired an exemption for an additional 5 guns, which fits with my ideas on how I'm structuring my weapons collection as I believe strongly in redundancy and buy into the "two is one, one is none" meme wholeheartedly.

My 10 gun collection choices:

1&2) Ruger KLCR .357 w/CT grips, X 2. My primary CCW and the spare I think is essential.

3&4) Glock G17L 9mm X 2, my service size home defense weapon, also a pretty darn fair all around weapon as well.

5&6) Ruger 10/22 TD w/ Eotech, .22lr, great all around .22.
Ruger American Rimfire w/ 6x Leupold AO target scope. Very nicely accurate .22 that is a
great Yin to the 10/22's Yang and shares magazines.

7&8) Rock River AR15 national match flattop w/ Trijicon 3-9x mildot scope in QD mount.
highly useful and versitle all around precision rifle.
Sig Sauer M400 AR 15 pistol, 12.5", a highly capable and useful PDW for personal &
home defense. Both weapons chambered in 5.56.

9&10) FN SLP 12ga w/ ghost rings & screw in chokes, fantastic weapon for slugs and
buckshot.
Browning Cynergy O/U 12ga, 30" barrels.: Camo'd head to toe it excels in all
traditional shotgun sports and uses and makes my redneck heart go all aflutter.

10 guns, 1 shotgun gauge and four common chamberings that will do the various tasks I need weapons for.

Only 5 Guns ?

(1)1911; (2)P-38; (3)CZ-82; (4)S&W Model 10; (5)Remington Model 870 12ga.; (6)Marlin Model 60 .22; (7)Ruger Single 6 / or Ruger Mark II / or High Standard Sentinel / or Double 9; (8)SKS / or AK-47 . Oppps......Only 5 ? Who put you in charge ? I may amend my list . Do you like to stress people out ? I'll get back to you . Maybe ? :uhoh:

What? We get a second five? Ok, I'll take five more from my collection...

1. Rossi/Puma Legacy .454 casull ss lever action rifle
2. Ruger Alaskan .454 casull ss revolver
3. Ruger Mark III fluted ss Hunter .22 pistol
4. Ruger Gunsite Scout ss .308 bolt action rifle
5. Mossberg 144 LSA .22 target bolt action rifle

People ask. "Why consider only five guns?" What scenario?
I have long considered an extensive road trip... A year or more travellng around all of North America pulling a little trailer. So....what five guns would I bring? This thread dovetails with that.

In these surveys, are present/future ammo prices never a factor? From my view, guns which are to be frequently used are determined/limited By ammo and reloading cost estimates.

If all are to be used quite often whether regarding ammo prices or not:
M-1A,
M-1 Garand,
SKS
Tokarev T33.
Beretta 92F.

That would be fun. Personally in that scenario I would be afraid of them getting stolen, so I would only bring 2 cheap guns and leave the rest locked up really securely in a safe place. I would bring a high capacity 9mm and a basic pump 12 gauge shotgun.

@ IgnitionOverride - I always consider ammo prices a factor and expect them to keep going up. You can do whatever you want though. I consolidate calibers so I only have to stock up on a few and I try to stick to NATO calibers because it's generally cheaper and more plentiful. To each their own though.

It would be hard to drop to 5, but here goes.
1) 870 12 gauge
2) Converted Saiga 7.62x39
3) Savage 111 .30-06
4) Glock 26 9mm
5) M1 Garand. Now I don't actually own a Garand, but I figure if I were to sell the rest of mine, I'd put the money towards a nice M1.

This is the first "only x" that I haven't listed a .22LR.

TheGoldenSaber:
These lists always give me the impression that many posters only describe their Dream guns.

With a heap of 7.62x39 and Russian ammo prices down to those of fall '08, buying a second SKS seemed like a good idea.
With strong future demand at the CMP for a very finite, decreasing (?) supply of Garands, a second M-1 last August seemed much better than postponing.

SBR AK in 5.45 & or 7.62x39
12 Gauge Remington 870 Wingmaster Magnum
Glock 17
Glock 21
Ruger 10/22

Good to go.

This is a really good one for me to answer. I'm not limited to five guns for any reason, but I've chosen to not let myself become a gun collector as I already collect enough other expensive things. I spend most of my weapons budget on shooting my guns so I get to shoot a lot. It just so happens that I own five guns and quite a bit of thought and research (here on THR) has gone into what they are. I'm really happy with what I own and none of them were significant compromises from what I would consider ideal. In the order I bought them:

1. Ruger 10/22
2. Winchester 1200 12ga pump shotgun
3. XD45 Compact
4. Saiga .308
5. Ruger Mk.III 22/45

I've had other guns but I don't let myself have more than I need and right now I don't see a need for anything else. I am a 44 year old life long shooter. I bought the 10/22 on my 18th birthday and the PPK/S the XD45C replaced on my 21st. :)

All five of my guns would be of good quality and have historical significance.

I would have one pistol probably a Colt 1911.
I would have one good rifle, probably a Winchester Model 94. (Pre-'64 of course)
I would have one shotgun-12ga., full choke, probably a Browning A5
I would have one shotgun-16ga., modified choke, probably a Browning A5
I would have one .22LR rifle. just because.

And all would have walnut stocks

I don't need five guns, for some time I used a top quality bolt action 22 RF, bolt action270 Winchester, and 12 pump Ga shotgun.. I shot small game and varmints with the 22 RF,, with 100 gr bullets shot larger varmints ,with 130 bullets shot pronghorn, mule deer, and elk, with the 12 Ga shot upland birds, ducks and geese. Had a 22 RF hand gun but dident need it.

Nice choices. I've wanted a Ruger MK III pistol for a LONG time. Never got around to getting one and now with .22 ammo like gold it will probably be a while. I was also eyeballing a Saiga .308. Luckily I have a 30-06 for my long range needs for the time being.
