Marlin 39 Club - Postcard Match

Proposed rule change

Question about submitting cards. If you submit only your best card then I'm confused about why some are talking about starting to send them or post them now. Wouldn't we all want to wait till the deadline to see if we shoot a better card by then? I assumed all the entries would flow in at the same time.

You can do that way if you wish. Or you can go out and shoot today and mail in your best card from that shoot. Some people may not want to worry about it over time, just shoot and get it over with and have that card scored. I shot cards yesterday and I am going to use the card that I shot with the peep sight for the competition. My scope was loose so I am going to redo that one. I left the rules purposely vague so you can take it as seriously or as lightheartedly as you want. If you have fun with it, I’m happy.

And speaking of that, having done some similar things I can tell you a received by deadline is much harder than a postmark deadline because of holdups in the mail etc.

The reason I gave us all of September, October, and 22 days in November was to give people plenty of time to get to a range, get something they are happy with, and get them to me. I am hoping to have results posted over the Thanksgiving weekend, which is a 4-day weekend for me and would give me plenty of time to judge cards (and eat lots of turkey). If someone tells me they sent me a card and I haven’t gotten it, I would most likely wait before posting results. But, we can amend the rules to create a postmark deadline of November 15, one week before Thanksgiving. Would anyone have a problem with that?

Shot mine today. I figure that my 39A with XS ghost ring sights (large aperature) and my 51 year old eyes is good for "minute of squirrel" at 25 yards, but I did a tad better than that.

What really surprised me was the fact that I shot better (much better) with "el cheapo" Winchester Dyna-points out of a bulk pack than I did shooting Winchester T22. In case of a tie I am in trouble, due to the fact that the Dyna-points shot into the bottom third of the card while the T22 ammo shot to point of aim, except that the group was 50% larger.

I didn't get to shoot today.

There were other pressing affairs, and it's raining. Bummer.

I'll be at the range next week, and I'll shoot then.

As far as shooting for two months, and then submitting the best target at the last minute...

Sorry, but that doesn't sound like fun to me. I'll carry a couple of cards out with me, and shoot a group that truthfully represents what I and my 39 normally shoot- and submit it.

For me, the fun factor is worth way more than any bragging rights.

And I wouldn't feel right bragging about something that only happened one time in two months of shooting.

But that's just me. Your mileage may vary.

***EDIT***

Jag, I'll agree to any deadline change that you think is appropriate. I just wanna have some fun.

The only reason I might need the whole time is because I just got the 39, definitely need the practice and may put other sights on it. I'm definitely not being competitive about this :)

We have another competitor, welcome Sistema1927, good to have you.

We'll just handle the deadline as it was originally stated, get the cards to me by Thanksgiving. If you have a late one on the way, let me know and I will delay as much as possible, but try to get your cards in the mail the week before turkey day. I don't think we need to get too formal with it.

As for how much to shoot, that is up to everyone individually. If you want to go shooting one day and call it good, go for it. If you want to go out a few weekends in a row and see if you get better (or worse), have a blast. The whole point of this competition is to have fun, me telling everyone how to have fun wouldn't work, so do as you please.

I wanted to shoot today but had a cookout instead. Not a bad deal if you can get it. :D

Jaguar,

I'm in.

When I was writing on posting the standings, I didn't mean to post the actual results, just who was in first place, second, etc. Don't post the scores. That way we can see over the next 2.5 months the movement in the standings as the scores come in.

So you really like that Skinner sight? I'm considering ordering one, because like you I've been around ARs a lot and peep sights come naturally.

Thanks again for running this,

My card has been sent! If I managed to get mine in first I may be able to say I was in first place for a day or so. :neener:

This isn't just about competition... It's scientific research. :p :D The more participants the more accurate (pun intended) the results will be. You have a chance to shoot for the betterment of mankind! :D No pressure though  :)

It'll be interesting to see what brand of ammo generally does better, which barrel length posts the most top spots, what the median group size is... etc.

JustsayMo WINS!!! the who will get their card to me first competition. :neener: Nice group BTW.

John, sorry I didn't understand. I don't mind giving everyone a current rundown, I'm winning in the non-magnified class because I haven't measured Mo's card yet. But when I do, be assured he has me beat.:fire: The scope class is still wide open, no submissions for that yet.

woof, I got my rifle last Christmas but I haven't been able to shoot except a couple times before now. Our local gun club range has been closed due to lead problems :uhoh:, but we got it sorted out and I am going to be shooting more now. I wish I hadn't committed on my non-magnified card, but oh well. I don't blame you for wanting to practice more, I should have done that myself. Practice is fun too.

Jag, I don't think anyone will criticize you for shooting another round. If your conscious is bothering you about it, just resolve to take the second rnd whether it's better or worse.

I think what we're trying to do here is dissuade people from shooting 100 cards (or even a dozen) and choosing the best. But if you shoot your best now, and it's terrible, then practice some more - a bunch maybe - then say, "OK, this card is it, regardless of outcome", then shoot it.

We need to remember: by our collective agreement, we're about having fun here.
If a new hummer was at stake, maybe it'd be different.

And we can always have a shoot off later among top shooters with more stringent rules if we want to.

Just my 2c.

I'm not sweating it, it isn't that bad really. Yes, Mo has me beat, but I don't care, I haven't been shooting much the last couple years. Besides, I still have the scope card to shoot, and if no one else enters, I'll win. :p

I'm really pleasantly surprised buy the amount of participation we have. I'm hoping for a few more. There is still time and everyone is welcome. I also want to reiterate that spouses and children (and grandchildren) are welcome. I would not feel a bit bad about being beat by a kid, well, maybe a bit. ;)

Shot with my scope today

Still not real happy with it. I was not planning to keep a scope on this rifle, but I was hoping it would do decent with one. I am starting to think it's the rings because I was using the same rings on a NEF .243 handi rifle and I couldn't get the gun to zero in well. I'm planning on selling the .243, maybe someone can make it work better than I, or maybe I just don't have the patiences. So, I'm putting the Weaver back on the .243, the Swarovski back on the .308, and the Skinner back on the .22.

That being said, I'm using a card shot today for the scoped card. Not a really good group, but I'll take it. I got to shoot, I had fun, met some interesting people at the range, and didn't pass out from the heat. All in all, a good day in Texas. :D

I'm not sure how I missed this thread for over a week! Now I need to see if I can miss the X as badly.

I'm in with my 39AS. I really miss the monthly postal matches we used to have here. Let's keep this a regular item if participation warrants.

Good to have you. I didn't know we used to have regular postal matches. I guess I really miss(ed) them also.:p As long as I don't have to be the judge every time it sounds like fun to me.;)

I'm sitting here with my model 39 laying across my lap.

Every time I pull this rifle out of the safe and handle it I'm reminded of shooting with my dad as a kid.

I hope that somebody, somewhere, got a chance to put a bullet in the SOB that stole that rifle.

But I digress...

I'm loading up for a trip to the range tomorrow and I'm only taking one rifle. My 39.

I've got my index card marked with an aim point in my range bag, and I'm going to shoot tomorrow.

I hope the weather holds out.

If my target card gets a little mushy, can I dry it out and submit it anyway?;)

But, we can amend the rules to create a postmark deadline of November 15, one week before Thanksgiving. Would anyone have a problem with that?
You should probably edit your top post in this thread, or folks are gonna get real confused when you say one date, then change it in the middle where it may not get noticed.

I'm waiting till the end to submit a card. To me this was to provide motivation (or an excuse) to shoot more so I don't want to send a card in early and hang it up. I'm looking at is I compete with myself till November, then send in my personal best. I have been thinking though, about a website that this club could link to, where those signed up could post scans or pics of cards and only those singned up could see them. Would that be a good thing to have?

Went to the range today.

I took about six cards with me, but I only shot one.

I thought about it pretty hard, and this is how I want to play it.

The card I'm submitting is an accurate example of how I can shoot my model 39 without any rest or support.

I can duplicate (And probably beat) this group on demand.

I REALLY enjoy this little rifle. I enjoy handling and cleaning it almost as much as I do shooting it.

I enjoy taking pictures of it and looking at pictures of others like it.

I'm not here to compete with anybody.

I sure did have a nice pleasant morning at the range!

I will be contacting JAG for mailing instructions today.

Jaguar - if the original post needs to be edited, let me know as you won't be able to edit it at this point.

However, my opinion on the proposed change is - don't do it. You left some wiggle room when you said, "Any entries received after the deadline but before the results are posted are up to the judge’s discretion whether to allow the entry or not."

Changing a rule, any rule, after some have already shot their targets is a basic no-no in running a contest. We can have the postmark deadline in the next contest if that is the consensus.

Having said that, making the change is no big deal, IMO. This is a fun match and any rule change before during or after the match won't change that, unless it seriously changes the outcome of the match.

Oh, and I'm number 13?! Maybe we need to exclude number 13 like they do in some hotels. ;) (Yes, I'm kidding. :) )

Gotta agree with Mal on all but "13". It's my lucky number. :) Hey, you can move me to 13 if you want.

As for rules, yeah, I think the way they stand is good. A playoff round later can be more formal.
____________

Related issue: I called my gunsmith this morning to check on the status of my 39.
It's been in his shop for nearly two months now, but he hasn't touched it.

Says he's swamped right now by center fire and shotgun repair for upcoming hunting season.

But, I objected, my 39 IS my squirrel hunting gun.

"I'll get to it soon as I can", he said.

<sigh>

I thought this would save time and shipping hassles,
but I realize now that I could probably have gotten it repaired quicker by sending it to Marlin.

Please don't give me an "official" slot, but I will try to get an entry in before the deadline. I have to drive 2 hours one-way just to shoot, so I will only have 2 or 3 potential cracks at it before the deadline arrives.

Thanks to everybody participating and administrating to make this thing possible...
