Participation:
This is a postcard match for the Marlin 39’s only. No distinction will be made between different types of Marlin 39’s, be that 39A, 39M, etc., as long as it is a Marlin 39 or its predecessor.

Participation is limited to members of THR and their families. Spouses and children are welcome.

There are two classes: Magnified and Non-Magnified.

Magnified will be any type of scope or sighting device that magnifies your view of the target. This includes but is not limited to scopes.

Non-Magnified are any sights that do not magnify your view of the target, this includes but is not limited to factory sights, peep sights, and red-dot sights.

Each participant may submit one card per class per rifle. The same rifle may be used in both classes. The same participant my submit cards for multiple rifles. The same rifle may be used by multiple family members.

The deadline for entry is Thanksgiving, November 22, 2007.

Rules:
This is based completely on the honor system; participants should follow all rules to the best of their abilities.

No mechanical supports, no sandbags. The rifle must be supported only by the participant’s two hands which cannot be supported below the elbow. You may place your elbows on a bench, the ground, knees, etc. or shoot off hand. All shooting positions will be judged the same.

The distance shall be 25 yards minimum. More than 25 yards is accepted but will not be judged differently. Both indoor and outdoor shooting will be allowed but will not be judged differently.

A 3x5 index card will be used as the target. The only marking allowed on the target side of the card is an X for sighting. No circles or bull’s-eyes allowed.

Each card shall hold three shots only, cards with more or less than three shots will be disqualified. The scoring will be done by measuring distance from the center of hole 1 to the center of hole 2 ,then from the center of hole 2 to the center of hole 3, then from the center of hole 3 back to the center of hole 1. The total distance will be the score for the card. Tiebreakers will be determined by the distance from the center of the card to the center of the furthest hit.

On the back of the submitted card write the following information:

1. Shooter forum name and/or family relation
2. Magnified or Non-Magnified
3. Gun make and model (include any information about custom work)
4. Sights (i.e. Swarovski Optik Z6i 2-12x50 or Skinner peep sights)
5. Shooting position
6. Indoor/Outdoor (weather conditions)
7. Ammo

All entries must be received at the judge's postal address before the deadline for entry. Any entries received after the deadline but before the results are posted are up to the judge’s discretion whether to allow the entry or not. No entries will be allowed after the results have been posted.

I (Jaguar) will be acting as judge as well as participating. I hope no one objects to me scoring myself, but if you do I will let you have the job of judging this. Once you have a card to submit, PM me and I will send you my mailing address for you to send your card to.

Again, deadline for entry is Thanksgiving, November 22, 2007.

Good luck, be safe, and have fun.

We have our 1st contestant.

Come on fellow 39er, this is your chance to claim bragging rights on The High Road. To put your money where your mouth is, as it were.

Who's in?

How will you measure when there is only one hole?
<subtle, rolling laughter>

Ah, now that's the spirit. ;)

Assuming I get my 39 back from the smith by T'giving, I'll definitely play ... just for grins. It's a brand new rifle for me (most of the time I've had it, it's been "down" with a firing pin issue; at my smith's now for repairs), and I haven't shot .22 regularly for years.

But it'll be fun to try. Just for comparison to see what my shooting goal is compared to others who do the best.

Thnx for putting this up, Jag. Looks like fun.

I'm in. How will you measure when there is only one hole?

I'll do the best I can... :scrutiny: You can be sure my cards will not look like that.

Glad to have you, just go out and shoot your cards, and when you are ready to mail them just send me a PM asking for the address.

I am putting Xs on my cards right now and going to the range tomorrow morning. I got my Scope on it now that I'm going to shoot a few cards with, then I get to try out my new Skinner sights.

Y'all have fun.

I'll play, I just have to remember to take a 3 x 5 card to the range with me.

I can only do the scoped one though, because I only have one 39 and don't feel like sighting it in again afterwards.:)

I'm guessing there is going to be alot of ties...I know mine is about as accurate as you can get at 25 yards....Sure we shouldn't do a 5 or 10 shot group?

We'll keep the match as is for this round. If we have a lot of participation and people are shooting 'one ragged hole', the next one we'll compensate and make it tougher. I figured the "no mechanical supports - no sandbags" rule would keep the 'one ragged hole' to a minimum, but if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

If it's too easy, feel free to shoot off hand. :p

Seriously, the only way I will get one hole is if the other two miss the card. I'll be shooting my first 39 which I just got yesterday and which is 30 years old with original iron sights. And, since for me the 39 is all about traditions, I'm going to shoot offhand. I may need till Thanksgiving to keep them on the card! The way I look at this - the winner is the one who has the most fun!

Woof, has the right idea I think. Don't let it get to serious. Just look
at all the good .22 shooting we get to do by the end of this thing.
The wife can stay busy going for more ammo! Right! LOL!

Sure we shouldn't do a 5 or 10 shot group?
I'd love to see a ten round, standing, offhand contest. That would start to separate the riflemen from the rifleboys.

What the hey, I'll throw my three round card in this one though. I can shoot this match right in my back yard and I haven't shot my 39A in a long while.. :)

...anyone under 45 has to shoot five shot groups and anyone over only three
No way, dude. Ain't gonna be no age-ism here. :p

That's like sayin' "boys have to shoot different than girls", 'n stuff.

Besides, when a 50-something nails three into a tight cloverleaf,
s/he's gonna want braggin' rights. :neener:

I doubt that I'm going to win this.

My 39AS still has the rebounding hammer and the super heavy gritty trigger.

I will shoot, and I hope to get "In the hunt". It's all about fun, and this rifle makes me smile every time.

Monday is range time for me, so expect targets soon.

Do I post pics of my target here?

I would suggest you don't post pictures of your targets, you don't want to tip your hand to the other competitors. You can it you want, but I think it would be funner to just have everyone send in their cards "blind", as it were.

Once you have a target to send in, PM me and I will send you my address for you to send the card(s) to.

I will periodically update this thread with who has requested my address, and who's card(s) I have received. The final results will be listed here after Thanksgiving '07.

Good luck, be safe, and have fun. :D

Jaguar,

Thanks for stepping up to the line on running this.

Are you considering posting the standings from time to time?

Yeah, standing offhand, you'd see how much of a rifleboy I am...I'm not too bad with supported elbows though.:D

Woof, are you an ageist???:scrutiny:

:)

Bazooka, Yes I am an ageist. I didn't used to be but now that my eyes are this old along with the rest of me, I feel I need age-based preferences :)

It's my pleasure John, I have wanted to do a competition this way for some time. As for posting standings, I'd rather people didn't know how well they had to do to beat someone who already sent in their card. Plus, if you knew your card was last place, would you send it in? I'll just sit on the standings until the final tally, then I'll post the results.

As for me, I shot this morning. I was using my scope and getting erratic results. It was driving me nuts, one group would look decent, I'd make an adjustment to the scope and the next group would go all over or I'd get a weird flier. :banghead: I finally got a semblance of a group and went with it and started shooting my cards, 5 for the scope (you can use more or less, I just put up 5). After I was done I went to pull the scope off to install my peep sight, and the screws on the Weaver base were loose :what: No wonder my groups were crappy. I may make my magnified class shoot a do-over on my next trip to the range.

On the plus side, I really, really like the Skinner peep sight. I had Dr. Skinner send an .025" aperture along with the standard .096", and I can really sight in the front post using the small aperture. Not only that, but the sight just looks right on the 39A. It's small, compact, and functional. Most of my rifle experience is with the M16 and AR15, so the peep sight just seems normal for me. I was having a blast just plinking steel targets out to 100 yards with this rifle. It was hard to leave the range today, just one more magazine full... :D

I also believe I will be in the competition in the non-magnified class in the post card match. I may be wrong, but I do like my group. :D

The unofficial list so far.

1. JustsayMo
2. Jaguar (me)
3. RimFire45
4. woof
5. Bazooka Joe71
6. DMK
7. Ithacaman
8. Fast Frank
9. johnmcl ?? are you in, or just watching
10. Nematocyst (come on... you know you want to :p)
11. Sistema1927

Ten would be good, twenty would be better. So come on folks, bragging rights up for grabs. You win this you will be the envy of The High Road for years to come. If someone questions your shooting ability you can just link to the posted results and LOL.

:D

Question about submitting cards. If you submit only your best card then I'm confused about why some are talking about starting to send them or post them now. Wouldn't we all want to wait till the deadline to see if we shoot a better card by then? I assumed all the entries would flow in at the same time. And speaking of that, having done some similar things I can tell you a received by deadline is much harder than a postmark deadline because of holdups in the mail etc.
