never thought I would see the day when .22lr was getting hard to find.

Yeah, but lately Wally World here in Wichita has been keeping up with the demand. They limit you to 6 boxes of ammo per day, regardless of caliber (6 boxes period even if you mix 'em up). I found Federal 325 round bulk paks of match .22 and 550 round bulk paks of hollow points Sunday night and grabbed 3 boxes of each. They had lots left after I got mine and still had a few several days later. To top that off, they aren't price gouging like some, either. The match stuff was less than 15 bucks/325 and the 550 round paks were $13.45/pak. I've found the more expensive match grade stuff by Federal to group slightly better out of the Remington 597. Don't know what it will do with a stock 10/22, but I'd bet it would shoot better than "Thunderbutts". In cold weather, half or more of the bulk pack Rem stuff I've had in the past won't even go bang.

They have tons of CCI "Mini-Mag" in stock, but it's in the 100 round paks and typically CCI is much more expensive, so nobody is buying it.

I'll be doing this as soon as I complete refinishing my stock. I'm at the range 3-4 days a week in the summer so finding range time is not an issue :)

Excellent shooting, all! Here's my entry, which I score as a 49. There is definitely a squeaker in the 4 point row, but trust me, it is touching. ;)

CZ 452
Weaver 3-9 x 32 AO
Federal 510's
Bench rest, sand bags, 50 yds
Sunny, 75 deg, 5 mph breeze or less (no excuses)

When/where was this? I don't remember the last hard rain near Charlotte (in Huntersville).

Hi, KSCCHTrainer. When you print your targets, are you using 8.5" x 17" paper, or standard 8.5" x 11"? When I print, everything doesn't fit on standard paper. Also, how "tall" is the largest (standing) target? I get about 4 3/8". Finally, it looks like for all positions, we are allowing supported shooting (i.e., bracing the rifle against a post, tree, doorframe, etc.). Is this correct?

Thanks
P51D

P51D,
I used 8.5 x 11 and clicked "Fit to printable area" on the print panel out of Acrobat Reader. I don't know if that gives the right size for the targets or not, but that's what I used. And yes, I used the door frame for support, following item #6 at the bottom that said any available support could be used.

I didn't bother to actually measure the size of the targets, just ran the carrier out to 50 yards on our indoor range and shot at 'em.

The bit with posting the Mosin M44 targets was just being a smart-alec after gvnwst said I had to post the results of that too when I mentioned I was going to try it for fun.

They also said just shoot 3 shots per silouette instead of the 5 stated on the target and score it accordingly.

Is subsonic ammo allowed?
Good question, I have had luck with CB Longs, but find it to be worse than Green Tag. I have yet to shoot any Eley Ltds. (but cleaned up and found a box I have had lying around), what ammo do you guys prefer/recommend?

Question for next month, Ill give it a go. Is subsonic ammo allowed?
Yep, any ammo. I am stuck with bulk crap, so i am stuck with losing, but you can run whatever you can get.

Shoot 5 or 10 5 shot groups benched at 50yd and find out what ammo your rifle likes best. Every rifle is different. ;) :D

I'm stuck with the bulk stuff too, but I did find a 325 round bulk pak of Federal "Target Grade Performance" .22 at Wally World for less than 15 bucks and grabbed it. Also got 2 Federal 550 round bulk pak's of the regular stuff. My Remmie 597 loves anything Federal, even the bulk stuff. 50 yard groups are under an inch. Kinda wish I had my old Marlin model 60 back. I gave it to my Son, and he says I ain't ever getting it back. That thing would literally drive carpet tacks at 75 yards in a no-wind or following wind situation. Didn't seem to care what ammo you used either, even the Remington "thunderbutt" stuff if you could get it to go bang. Marlin's barrels (even on the cheap rifles like the 60) seem to be better than anyone elses. I'd love to find a drop-in match barrel for the 597.

I'm not sure I'd trust the company selling them though. VQ no longer shows them on their own website and I'm not sure why. Maybe Remington got on them or something, or maybe they don't truly drop in? I had looked at the SS uncomp'd one but the price was and still is just a tad bit outside what I can afford right now. Thanks for the info though.

Thanks - I just emailed Volquartsen and asked them why they no longer have it on their website. We'll see if I get a reasonable answer from them.

I'd hate to buy a VQ barrel from someone else and then find out I couldn't get any warranty service on it if it turned out to be a reject.

My 597 shoots well enough for the time being that I'll sorta sit on my heels and see what transpires. It pots tree-rats at 75-100 yards okay, but head shots are kinda iffy beyond that, even with CCI mini-mags or stingers.

I've gotta try that black dot target again and see if I can hit the little ones. The first time I tried it I hadn't put the VQ hammer in the 597 and the tirgger pull was like 10 pounds! Now it's just a hair over 3 and crisp. VQ claimed approximately 50 percent reduction, but it turned out better than that on mine.

Wow, I got an almost immediate reply from Volquartsen on the 597 barrel.

My email to them and their reply - Sounds like they pretty well have it together. I checked Nice Shot's website and they don't have it anymore either, so I suspect the ones others are selling were originally purchased from Nice Shot and then like everything else, marked up as far as the traffic would bear. As an aside, yes, the magazine issues have been pretty much completely cleared up. I have 2 of the new ones and they work flawlessly in my 597, so hopefully VQ will decide to re-offer that barrel.

Dear Jim:

We manufactured a limited run for a company in Redding, CA, Nice Shot
(www.niceshot.net).

This is a barrel we did offer for several years but discontinued due to
magazine issues on the 597 rifle but I know a lot of those have been
resolved so we may look at offering this barrel again in the very near
future.

Don't feel bad that is all I had till I found that box of Eley Ltd., wish I could get a hold of some green tag.

Doh...but I want to know what is worth giving a shot...I have tried Rem, Rem. Golden HP, Rem. SS, Rem. Viper, Rem. Yellow Jacket, Fed. HP Bulk, Fed. Bulk, CCI Mini Mag, CCI Bulk, CCI CB Long, CCI Green Tag, Win. XPert, Win. SuperX...and found the CCI Green Tag to be the best. Have yet to try Rem. Eley Ltds, Rem. Club Xtra, and Wolf Match. Just wondering if I am missing something else to try.

Managed to get out to the range on the evening of Memorial Day so I'll try to beat the deadline and send in a couple of entries.

Had a beautiful evening to shoot but waited way too long to put up the targets. My granddaughter had been asking me to take her shooting and this was the excuse to do it.

She had almost no experience shooting so we spent some time going over sight picture, trigger control, etc. We shot at 25 yd. targets for awhile then decided to pick out spots on the 100 yd berm to shoot at.

We did that for about 3 or 4 hundred rds. before she talked me into putting up the match targets. It was really too dark at that point and I wasn't going to do it but there wouldn't be another opportunity.

We were shooting open sights and using a Marlin 39A and an old Remington 581S. Fifteen quick shots then switch rifles. Anyway, it was what it was. No excuses.

I was shooting benched/bagged and she was just snapping them off from a sitting/supported kind of thing.

Her targets were just for fun and only amounted to about seven points each but she was just shooting the targets so that I would. Mine were just so/so but the good part is that I got to shoot with her for almost three hours and she loved every minute of it.

In a week she will fly home to North Carolina but she'll be back and when she comes back one of the first things we're going to do is go shooting again.
